In the late 1970's Gilson began producing the Power-Bolt log splitters. Most splitters were and are still hydraulicly driven. Gilson took an alternative approach and designed a splitter that operated mechanically. Gilson used familiar designs including a tiller style chain drive case, a friction wheel common to snowblower, tractors and tillers, lead screw and torque converter. Advertised advantages were the ability to reset the splitter fast compared to hydraulics and adjustable stoke for efficiency. These machines were available in off road and over the road towable models. They were sold under the Gilson, Burns and Ford brand names.
